EMC Extends Service Assurance With Watch4net

What if you could ensure the availability—and performance—of your virtual data center?

With the acquisition of Montreal-based Watch4net Solutions, EMC provides another compelling option for getting your data center under better control.

EMC IT Operations Intelligence ensures the availability of the virtual data center (VDC) with a root cause or fault analysis engine second to none. And, while availability is a basic requirement for the 24×7 VDC, you also need to ensure performance, as you scale your mission-critical applications.

Watch4net Solutions APG software suite provides the performance monitoring, analysis, and reporting from vApp to LUN. While availability may be cast as black or white (available or not), performance assurance is more akin to keeping an eye on the varying shades of gray to assess the impact or potential impact of the dynamic elements of the VDC on applications and infrastructure. It all comes down to service levels and being able to deliver the throughput and response times expected by the unruly mob—er, users.

Watch4net is the performance complement to IT Operations Intelligence’s deterministic availability solution. This combo is service assurance for the VDC and the cloud.

What Happens In Las Vegas Goes On The Internet

Did you see any of the Hangover movies?

Well, EMC World is not like either of those movies. But, we do have pictures—and a video!

Unlike our heroes in Hangover, I know where I’ve been. It’s hard to forget a 16-hour workday spent in this whirlwind called EMC World. (Hope my boss is reading this part).  From pushing out three blog posts at 6:00 AM pacific time, to product sessions, through a number of analyst meetings, to the Solutions Pavilion floor, it was a long, exhilarating day. With more than 13,000 people in attendance, you could feel the energy in the air.

EMC announced a staggering 42 new products and technologies yesterday to speed your journey to the cloud. These introductions spanned all key EMC areas including storage, backup, virtualization, and software management.

The customers I spoke with were impressed. Plus, the many breakout sessions and exhibit floor demonstrations helped put the announcements into perspective, which made for a great customer experience. Don’t want to keep them guessing.  But, wait, there’s more. Continue reading

Increase Visibility Into Infrastructure Management With EMC DataBridge

What if you could create your own view of your data center?

Well, you will soon be able to develop your own custom visualizations with EMC DataBridge which provides a new way of thinking about—and creating—a single-pane of glass.

As covered in a recent post, IT infrastructure management solutions go deep, providing detailed information of only part of your infrastructure to address very specific use cases with varying effectiveness, but that is not how data centers should be run. While these solutions are inter-related in what they provide, they often exist as rigid silos of data and functionality within the data center. To truly run IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS), these silos must be broken down and combined to provide better insight into infrastructure resource use, issue identification resolution, metering, resource planning, and more.

EMC DataBridge is an enterprise management software that enables you to transform how you consume and manage your IT operations data by providing tools you need to combine EMC infrastructure data sources along with non-EMC data sources with business logic from your organization in new, meaningful ways. Transforming IT Application Protection Services with EMC AppSync

What if you could provide application protection with your end-user services?

Cloud computing services conversations seem to focus on providing end-users with business processes and the compute, network, and storage resources necessary to support them. But, not as much attention seems to go into the operational business continuance functions like application protection.

Maybe, it’s because throughput, response time, and capacity utilization metrics are more top-of-mind than measuring unplanned downtime. However, if your business relies on information or transactional processing like all of them do, you need to ensure the integrity and availability of your applications.

Announced today at EMC World, EMC AppSync for EMC VNX simplifies and automates application protection, and provides diagnostics on the health of your automated application business continuance plan.  It aligns multiple replication technologies with your applications and their service-level agreement (SLA) to ensure ongoing business processes. Storage Management Just Got Better With EMC VMAX And EMC ProSphere

Do you remember when you could tell where your data resided just by looking at the array?

It wasn’t that long ago when storage purchases went hand-in-hand with major application deployments. You had a fairly clear idea of where your data was stored for a particular application.

Then, along came virtualization and an abstraction between the application layer and storage. The relationship became less a marriage and more like group dating. Everything was cordial but it was no longer clear what the specific relationships were between application and storage. Next, cloud computing and automated storage tiering further redefined the rules and it became about getting the best out of all available resources and the best possible relationships among all parties involved.

Now, with the EMC VMAX announcement today, EMC Federated Tiered Storage (FTS) extends these relationships for new possibilities with third-party storage not previously part of the pack. Add to this capability the ability to manage this extended storage with EMC ProSphere and combine it with other products through the also just-announced EMC DataBridge. Suddenly, there are new relationship possibilities above and below the storage management layer. Continue reading
